I have seen some individuals with a disability look at me like a deer in a headlight when speaking to them about the possibillity of returning to work. Some are petrified at the thought that they may lose their only source of income; Social Security Benefits. Some even question if I am attempting to lead them into the dark underworld of crime. After all, Social Security Administration’s definition of disability is “the inability to engage in any substantial gainful activity (SGA) by reason of any medically determinable physical or mental impairment(s) which can be expected to result in death or which has lasted or can be expected to last for a continuous period of not less than 12 months.” BUT, it is Social Security that is now encouraging them to go back to work. Needless to say, this is cause for a bit of confusion.
