Declaring Your Independence

Cornelius BookerThe Fourth of July is known as Independence Day. It is the day we celebrate United States of America’s adoption of the Declaration of Independence. When most think about declaration of Independence, we think about the decisions that we make in order to become self-sufficient in life. Some of those important decisions involve the type of career we choose, the schools we attend or whether to continue our education and training beyond high school. But I want to remind our readers that there are several ways to declare your Independence.

Financial Independence is one of the most straight forward means to independence. And, in most cases, financial independence can be obtained through employment. It would do well for job seekers to find a job that will sustain them and have future growth. Workforce Solutions has many tools that can help with career decisions, and one tool is the High Skills High Growth job list. Workforce Solutions regularly provides a list of careers currently in high demand and will be in demand in the future throughout the Houston-Galveston area. The following list provides the latest update describing some of the best paying, high skill, high growth jobs available in our area. The list also includes what qualifications are necessary.

This information can be found on Workforce Solutions Career Exploration webpage under the heading “High-Skill, High-Growth Booklet.”

Once you find a job that will support your needs, you should consider what the educational requirements are for that job, and if you are willing to make the sacrifice to complete the education. As you read through the high skill high growth job list you may recognize that some jobs have more educational requirements than others. There are pluses and minuses associated with continuing education so you should determine if going back to school will help you become financially independent or not. Once you have obtained the education and you have the job, there may be other opportunities for growth to keep an eye out for.

Consider what your goals are and what steps you need to take to meet those goals. At that point, you may be well on your way to declaring your own independence and the Fourth of July will have a whole new meaning to you. Good Luck and Happy Fourth of July.
