May 2018 Networking Events

Josie TothIf you’re looking for events to attend in May, consider these two: The Woodlands Church Career Fair on May 24 and the 4th Annual Veterans & Individuals with Disabilities Hiring Event on May 29. But, before attending one of these events I’d like to remind you of a couple of things that will help you make a great first impression.

First of all, remember to research participating employers that will be present at the event. You can look online or at the library to find out information such as mission statements, core values, principles, and projects they’re working on. Then ask yourself – do I want to be a part of this company? If so, the next question you can ask yourself is – how can I help?

Then, let that employer know how you can help them meet their goals. One tool you can use is called a “30-second commercial.” A 30-second commercial is simply you identifying yourself, highlighting a few strengths and accomplishments you have, and showing an employer how you can help them – all in about 30 seconds. You can customize a 30-second commercial of yourself to include any of the following: knowledge, skills, abilities, education, and experience that’s relevant to a company’s goals.

If you’re having a mental block with the concept of a 30-second commercial and the idea of “selling yourself” doesn’t appeal to you, reframe it to a 30-second contribution statement. What knowledge, skills, abilities, education, and experience can you contribute that will help a company accomplish their mission statement and help complete their projects?

With these two steps in mind, a firm handshake, and a smile; may you find your next opportunity at one of these events!
