Luck O’ the Irish

St. Patrick’s Day, a day filled with everything green, is right around the corner. If you’re currently searching for a job and are perhaps short on “green,” you’re likely not in the mood for celebration. Here are some St. Patty’s Day themed tips that could improve your job search. Good luck!

Wear Green
Wearing green to blend in on St. Patrick’s Day is supposed to make you invisible to leprechauns. It ensures that you don’t get pinched.

While I wouldn’t say that wearing green is the best job search tip, I do think it’s important to “dress the part” when interviewing, networking, etc.

Dress in a way that helps you fit in with company culture. Research what typical attire is like at an organization of interest, and dress for success.

Of course if there’s a “company color,” whether it’s green or not, it doesn’t hurt to incorporate that into your outfit.

Kiss the Blarney Stone
Kissing the Blarney Stone might give you the gift of gab, along with a touch of eloquence and flattery. Who doesn’t need that when trying to impress employers?

If you’re anything like me, you could use a little magic to help you talk to people with ease. While I don’t have magic rocks to offer, I strongly recommend creating a 30 second commercial or CAR statement to help you prepare for discussions with an employer. These are tools featured in Job Search Skills Seminars offered by Workforce Solutions.

Beware of Leprechauns
Leprechauns are fairies with pots of gold, and if they’re caught, they grant you three wishes. They are said to be quite mischievous and will typically sabotage your wishes to make them backfire.

While I don’t believe in leprechauns, I do believe they can teach us a valuable job search lesson: Beware of organizations that make promises granting “employment wishes” in exchange for payment.

Workforce Solutions is an organization dedicated to linking job seekers and employers in the Gulf Coast Region, and the best part is that our services are made available at absolutely no charge to you!

So, hold on to your “green” and let us help you with your job search. While I can’t promise you a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow, I promise that implementing these tips, and visiting our Career Offices, will help in your search.

May the “Luck O’ the Irish” be with you! 🙂
