On The Job Training

Diego TrevinoThe Best Employer Invention Since Sliced Bread An apprentice learning under a master is one of the oldest forms of training in the history of the subject. Also, one-on-one training is one of the fastest ways to learn or teach a new skill. Workforce Solutions is now providing resources to allow you to hire talent and train them the way you want them to be trained.

We understand the Gulf Coast region needs talent the same way talent needs jobs. Through the “On the Job Training” program, businesses can be reimbursed up to 50% of a new worker’s wages, for up to 400 hours of work.

This hidden gem is definitely a “win-win” for both employers and employees. Not only are you giving new employees an opportunity to learn as they earn, you are investing in new talent. These candidates will be more compelled to work for you rather than participate in unpaid internships because you are giving them “hands-on” exposure and paying them for it.

In the past, some of our employers have received funding to help pay for employees that are more driven than their counterparts. One example is a hospital receiving $7.00 per hour to pay a nursing student $14.00 per hour to learn policies and procedures as a medical receptionist. Another would be Workforce Solutions’ reimbursing $8.00 per hour to compensate an employer for hiring an entry-level bookkeeper at $16.00 per hour.

If you’re an employer and considering OJT training, ask yourself these questions:

  1. Is the position you are hiring for 30 hours or above per week?
  2. Are you bringing in a permanent employee?
  3. Does this position provide opportunity for advancement?
  4. Will this position pay the employee at least $10.00 per hour?
  5. Do you have taxable wage histories for at least 3 employees?

If you answered “YES” to these questions, you may be deemed eligible for Workforce Solutions’ OJT program.

This is one of Workforce Solutions’ best kept secrets. My goal is to leak it. If you aren’t interested in this service, tell your friends. Have those friends tell their friends, and so on. This opportunity is the chance to provide one of the best forms of trainings since the beginning of time. Use your expertise to shape tomorrow’s workforce.
