National Disability Employment Awareness Month

This October marks the 70th Anniversary of National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM). The purpose of this initiative is to educate the public and employers about disability employment issues and to celebrate the contributions of workers with disabilities. This year’s theme ‘My disability is one part of who I am’ shares the important message that people with disabilities are just people who can bring another perspective to the table.

As we celebrate 70 years of NDEAM and 25 years of the Americans with Disabilities Act, it is important to note that Americans with disabilities are still unemployed at a rate that is much higher than that of people without disabilities. Employers should not miss out on the unique perspective that full inclusion can bring.

Here are just a few ways to mark NDEAM:

• Get and display a copy of “The True Essence of Strength and Freedom” by Astrid Wienken, winner of the 2015 Texas Governor’s Committee on People with Disabilities poster contest.

• Recognize the contributions of Americans with disabilities to our society and workforce

• Check out the Office of Disability Employment Policy page for ideas on celebrating NDEAM in your workplace.

Throughout the month of October, this blog will continue to highlight disability employment and having a more inclusive workplace. If you would like more information on recruiting and hiring persons with disabilities, contact the Workforce Solutions Regional Team.
