Memorial Day is a federal United States holiday that gives us an opportunity to honor the brave soldiers, sailors, marines and other men and women who sacrificed their lives while serving in the United States military.
They made it possible for us to enjoy just about anything we want. For instance, American workers are free to:
- Seek employment at the companies of our choice
- Interview and market our skills
- Seek and obtain job training
- Use the internet to network and find job openings
- Choose the best corporations to work for
- Resign from a job
For employers interested in hiring veterans, there are many incentives available.
Workforce Solutions offers on-the-job training (OJT) funds for candidates who are job-ready but might be lacking some of the core skills needed to do the job.
With OJT, up to 50% of a qualified candidate’s wages can be subsidized during the job training period. Another option for employers is the Work Opportunity Tax Credit, which can generate a tax savings of between $2,400 and $9,600 per hire.
Many people will spend this day attending parties, going to barbecues, going to the beach in Galveston with family and friends or perhaps even to the Houston Zoo.
As you’re enjoying time off, please don’t forget to be thankful for those Americans who died protecting our independence and the freedoms that we all enjoy.
And if you are an employer, and you’re in a position to hire, please consider the many benefits of employing a veteran! You won’t regret it.
