Memorial Day is observed on the last Monday of May. It was formerly known as Decoration Day and commemorates all men and women who have died in military service for the United States. Many people visit cemeteries and memorials on Memorial Day, which is the unofficial start of the summer season. It is traditionally known for its celebration of those we have lost, but during recent years it has also been a time for us to recognize the commitment and sacrifice made by those who have courageously served our country.

Cinco de Mayo: Toasting Success

Cinco de Mayo, Spanish for the 5th of May, is not Mexico’s Independence Day! It is actually a celebration of Mexican heritage. This day remembers a battle in 1862 where an outnumbered Mexican militia defeated the well-armed French soldiers at the city of Puebla in Mexico1. Since it is perhaps celebrated more in the southwestern United States than even Mexico, I thought I would take the time to spotlight two individuals of Mexican heritage who, through hard work and determination, found success in the Houston area.
