Summer Youth Programs

As part of the Regional Facilitator Team with Workforce Solutions, I get to work with youth on career exploration and job readiness skills. Frequently these young people communicate how frustrating and difficult it is for them to find a job. Below are a few scenarios that have been shared with me:
• I’m in high school and can’t get a job because I don’t have any work experience
• I’m 19, working on a GED, and need a job but don’t know where to start
• I’m a teen parent that is unsure how to support my child
• I’m a youth with a disability and am unsure where to look for opportunities

Landing a job in an employer’s market can be a difficult task. This task is made even more difficult when additional barriers such as those listed above are added to the mix.

Luckily, this year Workforce Solutions is proud to offer a Summer Youth Program that can help young people overcome these barriers and get a foot in the door in today’s job market. The summer youth program is open to youth between the ages of sixteen and twenty-one that meet eligibility criteria. This program will include a six week internship with local businesses. An additional component of the program will be job skills training that will help participants learn about what jobs are in demand in the Gulf Coast Region, identifying and sharing skills with employers, building a resume, how to interview. In addition the youth will be introduced to the impact the definition of Success in the New Economy will have on their future careers.

There are also youth opportunities available throughout the Gulf Coast Region from various other organizations. The following are links where you can find additional information on some of these programs:
United Way
Houston Area Urban League
The Student Conservation Association
The YMCA Teen Camp
The YMCA Teen Program

So, young person, what are your plans for the summer? Instead of sleeping, playing video games, or complaining about being bored, why not find out if you qualify for one of these summer youth programs? Even if you don’t, Workforce Solutions’ goal is to help people find a job, keep a job, or get a better job – this includes our youth population; why not stop in and see how we may be able to ease your frustration and make your summer a little “greener”?
