Today, November 11th is Veteran’s Day, a day to honor and celebrate the brave men and women, both past and present, who serve and have served our nation and sacrificed for the common good. These every day heroes hold a special place in our communities!
Here are a few of the services available in the Gulf Coast Region dedicated to helping veterans in their search for civilian jobs:
At Workforce Solutions we help veterans and their families enter or return to the nation’s workforce. If you‘re a veteran, Workforce Solutions helps you assess how skills you acquired in the military can improve your job prospects. We help you figure out what skills are in demand and where you can get those skills or improve the skills you already have. Also know that if you visit one of our Workforce Solutions offices, there are veteran’s representatives (veterans themselves) available to assist you with individual needs.
The Hiring Red, White, and You! Job Fair is taking place at Reliant Center on November 14, 2013. It is just for veterans, their spouses and service members. Plan to attend and be sure to pre-register so that you get your FREE parking pass!
The Texas Medical Center Veteran’s Initiative is a job site, started in January 2012, for veterans interested in the medical industry. The Initiative to date has reached a milestone of filling more than 1,000 jobs for former military members.
In addition to employment services, there are several area agencies that offer transportation services and other assistance.
Many businesses are also offering free meals and discounts in honor of our veterans on Veteran’s Day.
Finally, I feel the need to give a nod to the military families for the sacrifices that they make. I grew up an Army Brat, my father-in-law served in the Navy, both of my nephews served in the Army (one past and one present), my adopted son served in the Navy, and my youngest son plans to join the Armed Forces when he is old enough. I understand that it is not just the soldier that serves this country, but his or her entire family.
It is with gratitude, pride, reverence, and a deeply patriotic heart that I personally would like to say, “Thank You” to all American Heroes and their families on this Veteran’s Day!
