What to do Next Year?

It’s New Year’s Eve – have you been thinking about doing some different job search activities for next year? Attending networking events is a great way to get back into your job search for the New Year. Many job seekers find them helpful and a great way to meet people who are willing to encourage them to continue with their job search. Or, how about checking out what your local library has to offer? Libraries are a wonderful source for your job search needs. Let’s look at both of these options.

Networking Groups

Job seekers all over Houston visit Between Jobs Ministry (BJM) at Northwest Bible Church on Wednesday mornings to receive encouragement, attend job search skills training, network, and obtain job leads. Oftentimes, recruiters and employers share their job openings after the job search skills training classes, and speak briefly with job seekers to review their qualifications. Many other churches offer some type of job search support. Call the churches in your neighborhood to see if they provide this service. Another group is Women & Wine on Wednesdays; and yes, you guessed correctly, it is just for women.

Library Events

Have you wanted to brush up on your computer skills? Libraries offer free computer classes on Microsoft Office programs. Sometimes they provide classes on how to use certain electronic devices. For instance, in January 2013, Kingwood Branch Library has basic skills classes for the iPad and Kindle Fire. How cool is that? Each library has their specific computer-related training and other events based on the needs of its community. To find the library nearest you, include your city or county name in your Google search. For example: “Houston TX public library locations”; “Montgomery TX public library locations”; and “Harris county TX public library locations”.

Maybe I’ll see you at one of the networking events or libraries. Until then, have a very, very happy New Year!
