So you are jobless and find yourself gaining weight. Most likely it’s from those late night internet job searches followed by a pint of your favorite Blue Bell ice cream. You think about going to the gym tomorrow to do something about it, but you wake up at 11:00 am the next day and find your gym membership is cancelled. Sound familiar?
Well guess what my friend, you are not alone.
As stated in this Forbes article, Unemployment and Weight Gain, job loss and a subsequent weight gain has become a common problem. A couple of pounds may not seem like much now, but it could get worse; “… the few “insidious pounds” many people put on after receiving the devastating blow of job loss can snowball before you know it.” Message here, lose them. But how . . . you’re unemployed?
Not a problem, but you need to create a routine. For example, each time you go to the store, park further away from the entrance so you have to walk more. Find and join a free fitness class. Walk around a park, try Herman Memorial Park if you live in Houston. And avoid those eating frenzies!
I am not making light of the fact that you are jobless, but I am pointing out that you have control over what you do to yourself. You control you. Looking better will make you feel better and that will shine through when you are speaking with an employer.
Here is some information to help you get started:
• Discovery Green – free yoga and Zumba fitness classes
• Houston Public Library – free aerobic and yoga classes
• City of Houston Fitness – free or cheap public fitness clubs
• City of Houston Parks – free public park information
So don’t wait! Put together a routine, avoid the Twinkies, and take a walk around the block.
Until next time Slim,
~ Juliette
